DS Structures completes low head hydroelectric project
Warrington based construction company, DS Structures completes Yorkshire’s largest ever low head hydroelectric project
DS Structures, based in Warrington attended the opening of the £2.1 million Thrybergh hydroelectric plant in the village of Kilnhurst near Rotherham earlier this month (16th October). DS Structures worked on the project for their client the Eric Wright Group.
The plant represents a long-term investment in the local energy infrastructure and will generate baseload renewable energy to 300 local homes and businesses, as well as helping to return salmon to the River Don, a sight not seen in over 100 years.
Developed by Barn Energy and Yorkshire Hydropower, the plant will generate electricity 24/7, 10 to 11 months of the year for the next 100 years. The project has been completed on time, on budget and with 80% of the contracts placed with British companies.
DS Structures, working in this instance for Eric Wright Group delivered the complete FRC (reinforced steel) and construction package for the scheme including basement slabs, concrete walls and suspended slabs. The project was particularly challenging as the 15 strong workforce were working parallel to the River Don and working below ground level.
Commenting on the successful delivery of the project Paul Moreira, Managing Director of DS Structures said: “This was a complex and challenging build but I’m delighted to say that our expert team managed and delivered the project precisely as per the specifications. DS Structures are delighted to have been involved with a project of this nature and look forward to utilising our expert knowledge and skills in the delivery of future renewable energy schemes.”
