Sheffield College’s £8.8m Centre for Creative Industries officially opens

A new £8.8m facility to cater for the future of Sheffield City Region’s creative and digital industries employers has officially launched.

On Friday November 20th, the Centre for Creative Industries at The Sheffield College Hillsborough campus, Livesey Street, opened.

Councillor Julie Dore, Leader of Sheffield City Council, who officially opened the new building, said: “The Sheffield College is investing in facilities that will train young people in the skills they need. This will help them get jobs, support employers and will be a boost to regional growth. It’s wonderful to have opened the new facilities.”

The curved three-storey Centre for Creative Industries now extends the existing Hillsborough campus, and houses a new theatre, drama, dance, television, photography, music and radio studios and £450k of new equipment.

Creative industries specialisms offered at the College include art and design, graphic design, games development, media, music, journalism, dance and drama, and photography. Courses previously located at Norton campus, which closed in the summer, have moved across to Hillsborough campus.

Jason Pepper, executive director, finance and resources at The Sheffield College, said: “Our new multi-million pound creative industries facilities are some of the best in the north. We are working with Sheffield City Region LEP and employers to provide the training needed to grow the regional economy.”

The Centre for Creative Industries is one of two new buildings that have opened to Sheffield College students this term. A £6.8m new building specialising in engineering has also been completed, and is due to be officially launched next week.

Both new build projects have received a total of £10m capital funding from the Skills Funding Agency - money specifically ring-fenced for building projects - approved in October 2013.

The facilities have been built by Clugston Construction and designed by Race Cottam Architects.
