Royal Marines help college students to shape up

Teesside college students were put through their paces as they gained a fascinating insight into a career in the Royal Marines.

Redcar & Cleveland College has introduced a range of courses that prepare successful students for the public services industry, which takes in the armed forces, RAF, fire and rescue service, police force and prison service.

Some of the students took part in a special event at the college to open their eyes to the range of careers on offer in the industry. Members of the Royal Marines came along to give a presentation and lay on a series of team building activities and command tasks, which tested the students’ physical fitness and ability to respond to sudden commands.

Jacob Pitts, who is studying for a BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Public Services at the college, said: “The event was a great way of gaining first-hand experience of life in the Royal Marines and in other careers in public services. It enabled me to apply the skills and techniques that I’ve learned in the classroom to practical situations and physical tasks.

“It was no walk in the park and the Royal Marines pushed us to our limits!”

Alys Tregear, student services manager for Redcar & Cleveland College, said: “Events such as this help to prepare students for the world of work or higher education if they choose to further their academic career. They are also taught the value of transferable skills such as teamwork and good communications.

“Public services is a vital area of the local economy and offers a variety of career options for students who are interested in this line of work.”
