Work underway on £25m project to transform Paul McCartney’s birthplace
A £25m project to transform the former Walton Hospital site in Liverpool into a mixed-use housing scheme is now underway.
Cheshire-based developer Mulbury is behind the scheme, which will deliver 125 homes for housing association Riverside and 70 for private sale, in addition to an Aldi supermarket that will create 50 jobs.
Mulbury’s land and planning director, Andrew Booth, said: “Before we took on this scheme, the site had been lying vacant for some time and there were complex legal, planning and technical challenges to overcome before it could be redeveloped.
“The remediation of the site is progressing well given the challenging nature of the project.”
He added “We’re now looking forward to seeing these new homes come out of the ground over the coming months and a new community taking shape.”
The homes, built by contractor Harbur Construction, are expected to be complete by the end of next year, while the Aldi store is due for completion this summer.
Walton Hospital, located off Rice Lane, is famous as the birthplace of former Beatle Sir Paul McCartney. With the hospital demolished in 2011 and services transferred to Fazakerley, part of the site is today occupied by Mersey Care NHS Trust’s new Clock View Hospital.
Cllr Ann O’Byrne, Liverpool’s Deputy Mayor, commented: “This is a fantastic scheme which will create good quality homes and also see a new community created in this area.
“It is yet more evidence that we are delivering on our commitment to build 5,000 much needed new properties in the city, giving people with a range of budgets a wider choice of accommodation in the rented and private sectors.”
Property services firm JLL served as planning consultants on the scheme, while law firm Primas Law provided legal advice to Mulbury as it acquired the land. Lymm-based architects Eden Building Design, meanwhile, produced designs for the scheme’s houses.
