New Wigan logistics centre could create hundreds of jobs
A new logistics distribution facility in Wigan with the potential to create hundreds of jobs has been unveiled.
The M6 Epic 110+ centre, which represents a joint venture between commercial property developer db symmetry and the property fund management arm of financial services firm Legal and General, comprises 110,000 sq ft of warehouse and office space at South Lancs Industrial Estate.
db symmetry director Andrew Dickman said: “Wigan works very well for logistics and distribution developments thanks to its proximity to the M6 as the main artery through the north of England.
“There is also an excellent workforce here which businesses recognise and want to employ.”
The building includes 10 level-access doors, two drive-in doors, 22 spaces for trailers and a 122-space car park.
The deputy leader of Wigan Council, Cllr David Molyneux, commented: “A new logistics centre like this shows the confidence that people are having developing in Wigan and bringing industry to Wigan.
“This is a fantastic opportunity to create more jobs in the borough.”
He continued: “Location-wise we are good if not better than a lot of areas in the North West due to our proximity to the national motor network.
“We are also committed to investing in improving our own infrastructure to attract investment, support businesses and the growth of our local economy.”
The developers have now secured planning permission to extend the site with an additional 70,000 sq ft of space.
db symmetry and Legal and General Property are also behind retailer Poundland’s new 323,000 sq ft logistics centre, which is currently under construction at South Lancs Industrial Estate and is expected to create as many as 800 jobs in the coming years.
