Independent Darlington film company hopes to defy arts cuts with crowdfunding campaign
Broken Scar Productions (BSP), an independent film and media production company, has launched a crowdfunding campaign to fund its latest crime thriller movie project.
With a lack of funding for North East creative projects available, the Darlington-based firm has turned to Kickstarter, setting up a page which hopes to raise at least £10,000. The money would help the company to shoot ‘Sparrowhawk’, a feature length ‘taut, gritty crime thriller’, which BSP hopes to begin in Summer this year.
Creatives across the country are increasingly turning to crowdfunding platforms, ie raising small amounts of money from a large source of people online, in order to fund their ideas.
Darlington has been one of the North East’s worst affected arts areas to suffer from arts cuts since 2010. Last month, Darlington Borough Council leader Councillor Bill Dixon said he “felt sick” proposing £13m of cuts that would see about 200 jobs lost.
Determined to unlock the North East’s creative potential, BSP are undeterred by financial restrictions and hope people will continue to support the North East’s creative industry.
“We try to produce projects including both shorts and feature length films that are entertaining, thought provoking and far outweigh any budget constraints using local cast, crew and fantastic locations - of which we in the North East are fortunate enough to have an abundance of.”
Speaking of the film itself, BSP added: “With Sparrowhawk we have taken a tense and intriguing premise and stripped it back to make it much more taut and gritty.
“The question of interrogation, redaction, corruption and innocence vs guilt are issues that intrigue us all and we have created a world where one man is pitched against an apparent insurmountable wall of corruption and power but as the story unfolds it becomes clear all is not what it appears. In other words we hope we have created an exciting yet mysterious story which we believe will keep you second guessing.”
