Sheffield firm makes replacement hip for Britain’s oldest woman

JRI Orthopaedics, a manufacturer of orthopaedic implants and surgical instruments, has created a new hip used in a record-breaking operation.

The Sheffield firm’s product was used during a hip replacement operation carried out on Gladys Hooper, who was aged 112 at the time and entered the Guinness Book of Records as the oldest person ever to undergo the procedure.

Gladys, who turned 113 shortly after the surgery, is the oldest woman in Britain.

Consultant orthopaedic surgeon Jason Millington conducted the operation at St Mary’s Hospital on the Isle of Wight, using a furlong cemented hip made by JRI Orthopaedics.

Michael Colling-Tuck, the hip product Manager at JRI Orthopaedics, commented: “We are delighted that this truly remarkable lady came through the operation and has been able to celebrate her 113th birthday.

“Providing surgical implants which enable re-mobilization for people who have suffered a hip fracture as a result of a fall is something we have been specializing in for more than 30 years.”

He continued: “JRI is proud that many thousands of patients have benefited from the same type of high quality hip implant, like the one Gladys has received, manufactured with care and dedication in our Sheffield facility.”

JRI currently employs a team of 115 at its manufacturing centre in Chapeltown.
