60 Ellesmere Port jobs in danger as Interserve announces closure plans
Dozens of jobs are on the line as construction firm Interserve has announced plans to shut down its manufacturing facility in Ellesmere Port.
After facing difficulties from ‘economic challenges’ posed by the gas and oil and energy-from-waste industries, the company decided to close down its operations in the east Cheshire town, putting 60 jobs on the line.
According Construction News, the company told affected workers that while there is a potential buyer, a firm offer had not yet been made.
An interserve spokesman commented: “We are closing our mechanical and fabrication facility at Ellesmere Port.
“All employees impacted by the closure are being consulted with. We have also advised all employees that we have had interest from a company which is presently searching for a manufacturing facility in this sector.”
He continued: “We are in discussions with this business and hope that we may be able to avoid redundancies.
Speaking further, the spokesman said the company is taking steps to “mitigate the impact on employees” where possible by providing alternative employment “within Interserve or elsewhere”, adding: “The closure will have no impact on our ability to support our customers.”
Less than a week ago, Interserve revealed a £70m dent in its Glasgow-based energy-from-waste operations stemming from design, procurement and installation issues at the gasification plant.
The Ellesmere Port manufacturing plant is due to close its doors for the last time on July 1.
