Northern Clothing drives training

Northern Clothing’s aim to recruit apprentices through the establishment of a training academy has taken a step forward with the company’s move to new premises on UK Land Estates’ Tyne Tunnel Estate, North Shields.

By sub-letting 14,274 sq ft within Chirton Engineering’s 50,000 sq ft facility, Northern Clothing has created for itself a head office and production area for its wide range of sports clothing.

“Knight Frank made us aware of the availability of this superb space,” says Paul Varley, director, Northern Clothing. “They helped us shape the deal which not only takes us closer to an academy-style training facility for apprentices but helps us re-shore manufacturing from the Far East. This is a significant step forward.”

Michael Morris, business development manager at Chirton Engineering, says they had invested in producing a first-class training facility in part of its 50,000 sq ft factory. “Northern Clothing’s interest was very timely and we are delighted to have such a progressive company as our immediate neighbour,” says Mr. Morris.

Paul Varley says the current workforce at Northern Clothing of 20 is expected to double within the next three to six months.

Chirton Engineering has a wide customer portfolio ranging in sectors from sub-sea, oil & gas to the automotive industry, including Formula 1. Recently, Chirton has been successful in becoming a tier 2 supplier for the nuclear industry.
