Go North East retains Hadrian’s Wall contract
Thanks to the success of the seasonal AD122 Hadrian’s Wall bus service, Go North East has been awarded the contract for another four years, by Northumberland County Council.
Go North East has now upgraded the service, which runs from Hexham to Haltwhistle.
Passengers, many of whom are tourists, are enjoying riding newer vehicles after the route’s vehicles were replaced by higher specification Optare Solo buses.
The service now also has next stop announcements thanks to some funding from Visit England.
There will be a renewed push on marketing the Roman route, with support from North East tourism backers, Newcastle Gateshead Initiative and Northumberland Tourism. This will include new visitor hubs that promote Hadrian’s Wall at Newcastle, Hexham, Haltwhistle and Carlisle railway stations.
Development manager at Go North East, Mark Ellis said: “We are obviously very pleased to be able to continue running the AD122. This gives us some security which will allow us to invest in the service to grow revenue over the full contract term.”
A new ticket called ‘Hadrian’s Frontier’ has been launched. The new travel option can be bought on any Go North East bus and allows unlimited travel on the AD122, allowing you to hop on and off to enjoy different parts of the Wall.
