Liverpool FC Main Stand update: New public areas honour 96 and Bob Paisley

Liverpool FC have confirmed the names of two public areas to be created outside the newly expanded Main Stand at Anfield stadium.

The first, 96 Avenue, will be a tree-lined path in front of the Main Stand linking Walton Breck Road high street with Stanley Park. 96 Avenue will also serve as the permanent home of the Hillsborough memorial.

The Reds are also creating Paisley Square where the Main Stand meets the corner of the Kop. Named in memory of legendary LFC manager Bob Paisley, the Square will provide space for fans to gather together ahead of each game and experience the Anfield atmosphere.

According to a post on the club’s website, Margaret Aspinall, the chair of the Hillsborough Family Support Group, commented: “We are delighted that this beautiful area in front of the Main Stand will be named in memory of the 96.

“We have been speaking with the club throughout the expansion project on all Hillsborough matters and I’m sure fans will enjoy walking down and visiting 96 Avenue.”

Discussing the plans for Paisley Square, Bob’s sons Robert and Graham said in a joint statement: “It is truly an honour for our father to be recognised in this way and we’re grateful to the club for being involved in this incredible project.

“People who knew dad would know that he didn’t like any fuss or being in the limelight but having the Paisley Gates and now the Paisley Square is true testament to the success that he had as manager and ensures that his memory will live on.”
