More record passenger numbers for Heathrow
Heathrow Airport has announced it welcomed a record number of passengers through its terminals in November as volumes continue to rise ahead of expansion at the London airport.
Heathrow, which got the nod for a new third runway in October, saw 5.72m passengers pass through its gates last month, a jump of 2.5% on last year and a record for the month of November.
The transport hub also continued to enjoy robust growth in its cargo volumes, with a 4.4% jump fuelled by increases in markets such as China (10.6%), Turkey (10.4%) and Mexico (7.3%).
Passenger numbers to emerging markets including Mexico, China and the Middle East were all up 8% too.
Heathrow Chief Executive, John Holland-Kaye, said that the figures show how ‘Heathrow is delivering for the UK’ in the wake of Brexit after the airport accounted for 30% of the UK’s non-EU exports last year.
It comes after Heathrow announced the line-up of contractors who will design and deliver the new runway at the airport, once the project has jumped through the manifold political and legal hoops.
Amec Foster Wheeler, Arup, Atkins, Grimshaw, Mott MacDonald, Jacobs and Quod were all signed on to four year contracts last week to design and deliver a ‘sustainable’ expansion.
