Yet another London airport is planning major multi-million pound upgrade works

With preparations for a third runway at Heathrow Airport continuing apace, London City Airport plotting £344m improvement works and London Luton Airport embarking on its ambitious expansion and light rail link schemes, yet another of London’s airports has revealed its grand modernisation plans.

London Stansted Airport has unveiled its designs for a new £130m arrivals building as part of continuing improvement works following its acquisition by Manchester Airport Group (MAG) in 2013.

The proposed 34,000 sq m building would be spread over three floors and includes plans for expanded immigration and baggage areas, along with more retail spaces.

If planning permission is granted, the new arrivals building will sit adjacent to Stansted’s current terminal building, which will be reconfigured to be entirely dedicated to departing passengers once the new arrivals building is operational.

Stansted Airport’s Chief Executive Officer, Andrew Cowan, commented: “Since MAG acquired the airport in early 2013, we have turned Stansted into one of the UK’s fastest growing airports.

“It has always been our vision to invest in its infrastructure to create the best experience for our growing number of passengers and airline customers and we have already invested over £150 million to update our terminal and satellite facilities.

“Subject to planning consent, the next stage will be to develop our concept designs in conjunction with our stakeholders and business partners ahead of awarding any contracts for the construction works.”

MAG anticipates work to take three years to complete and has earmarked a 2022 completion date.
