Manchester Law School launches new research hub at MMU
Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU) has announced the launch of a new research centre.
Based within Manchester Law School, the Manchester Centre for Law in Society (MCLS) will serve as a hub gathering together the legal research being carried out at MMU.
The facility will support the creation and dissemination of research that enhances the development of the communities – whether regional, national or international – in which is it located.
Prof. Mark James, Manchester Law School’s director of research, will head up the centre.
In giving his inaugural lecture at the university Prof. James, who specialises in sports law, said that when he first studied at Leeds University, sports law as he knows it today did not exist – the field was referred to in terms such as ‘sport in law’ or ‘sport and the law’.
MCLS has been set up to draw together researchers from different traditions working across a range of subject areas including, in addition to sports, European and international law, equality and families.
The centre will work closely with the Sylvia Pankhurst Centre for Gender Research, which is also based at MMU.
Speaking at the launch of the centre, the head of Manchester Law School, Catherine Little, said she is “delighted” that Prof. James will be leading MCLS.
