New businesses are booming across Yorkshire's 'fertile environment'
Over the last 12 months, the new number of companies registered in Yorkshire has significantly rose, according to new figures recently published.
During 2016, 37,707 new businesses were registered across the county, compared to 35,760 in 2015. The total number of registered companies increased to 235,214.
The East Riding of Yorkshire achieved the greatest growth at 7.7%, followed by South Yorkshire (6.2%), West Yorkshire (5.2%) and North Yorkshire (3.2%).
Leeds formed the most new businesses (7,736), followed by Bradford (3,876) and Sheffield (3,714).
West Yorkshire and the East Riding of Yorkshire both achieved a record year for company formations.
The statistics come from the ‘Inform Direct Review of UK Company Formations’, using data from Companies House and the Office of National Statistics.
John Korchak, director of operations at Inform Direct, said: “These figures underline the positive entrepreneurial culture that fosters new company formations and drives economic growth.
“So far, at least, we’re not seeing evidence that the Brexit vote has dented confidence among those considering starting up in business.
“Yorkshire again delivered an impressive number of new companies in 2016, demonstrating that it offers a fertile environment for new businesses to spring up and prosper.
“For West Yorkshire and the East Riding of Yorkshire, it was a record year for new company formations.”
