Jones Bros complete RES’ Garreg Lwyd Hill Wind Farm as the site prepares to start generating energy

Leading civil engineering firm Jones Bros has successfully completed the construction of a 17-turbine wind farm in Powys, Mid Wales.

Upon full operation in April, Garreg Lwyd Hill Wind Farm will be capable of providing sufficient renewable energy to meet the average needs of more than 26,000 homes – equivalent to nearly 40 per cent of all the homes in Powys.

Family firm Jones Bros initially started work in January 2016, on behalf of client Renewable Energy Systems (RES). Involvement in the construction of the wind farm, located between Felindre and Llanbadarn Fynydd, is Jones Bros’ first large contract with RES.

The project has involved a major enabling works package, including the building of a 3.5 km track up to the wind farm site and a substation.

Geraint Thomas, regional manager for Jones Bros Civil Engineering UK, said: “Work has progressed extremely well at the site, despite some challenging weather conditions.

“We have also completed work to widen laybys and the building of a relief road at Newtown to accommodate the turbine deliveries.”

Once operational, Garreg Lwyd Hill Wind Farm will contribute at least £153,000 per year to the local community via the Local Electricity Discount Scheme and a community benefit fund.

Rob Kemeys, RES’ project manager for the wind farm, said: “We are very pleased with Jones Bros’ performance as they brought with them a wealth of construction experience and have provided a safe working environment, whilst minimising local disruption.”

Jones Bros workers are expected to remain on site until the end of March as they carry out reinstatement works.
