First graduate from new housebuilding industry degree
A quantity surveyor who works in Bristol has become the first person to graduate from a new housebuilding industry course.
Bethan Powell has been awarded a foundation degree in Residential Development and Construction, designed by Barratt Developments, which includes Barratt Homes and David Wilson Homes.
Bethan graduated from Sheffield Hallam University following three years of study and practical work at sites across the Bristol region and in the company’s commercial department.
Now a quantity surveyor within the five star housebuilder’s Bristol division, Bethan hopes to use her skills and qualification to help her move up the career ladder.
She said: “The course was a great way to learn more about the housebuilding industry, the theory behind construction and to meet other people from the company working around the country,” she said.
“I’m now involved in managing live construction sites and the course was really useful in providing me with a detailed insight into all aspects of being on site.”
Barratt Bristol managing director Russell Glimstead added: “This degree was a first for us, and for the industry, and I’m so pleased to have seen Bethan’s hard work has been rewarded. She is a valuable member of the team here.
“The sector and market are constantly changing and evolving and our workforce face new challenges in the increasingly technical build processes, so we continue to invest in people today to shape the future of the construction industry.”
