Work set to begin on McCarthy & Stone retirement development in Pocklington
Construction work will soon begin on McCarthy & Stone’s forthcoming development on George Street in Pocklington, York.
The scheme, which will see the redevelopment of the soon to be vacant former Co-Op store, will comprise 34 one and two bedroom Retirement Living apartments, specifically designed for people aged 60 and over.
In addition, the development will seek to address the under-supply of specialist retirement housing in the area.
Liz Green, regional sales and marketing director for McCarthy and Stone North East, said: “We hope that our new George Street development will provide a positive contribution to the local area.
“By building more age-exclusive retirement housing in Pocklington this will free up much-needed family homes in the local area, and ultimately help first-time buyers through the trickle-down effect in housing chains.
“The development will also have a positive economic impact on supporting local high streets. We average that schemes like this one will generate £670k per year in local spending by homeowners which will go directly into existing shops and businesses in the market town; that’s £125k more than a general needs housing scheme, and £69k in council tax for local facilities.
“Moreover, as construction gets underway, the plans will see us employ around 60 local companies, supporting local jobs and with additional job opportunities created when the scheme opens in.”
The apartments will provide additional security measures, including 24-hour emergency call systems, as well as a dedicated House Manager who ensures the day-to-day running of the development.
Each apartment at the development will also feature a fully fitted kitchen, living area and an en-suite bathroom; as well as on-site parking.
