Mace appointed to 26-storey residential tower next to the Shard

Real Estate Management (REM) and Sellar have today (Tuesday) confirmed that Mace has been appointed as the construction manager for their Shard Place site.

The property, which will become the third tower at Renzo Piano’s Shard Quarter development, will replace Fielden House, a 1970s office block that currently sits on the site, and provide 148 residential apartments over its 26 storeys.

Sitting next to The Shard and the News Building, the tower will provide 180,000 sq ft of space with apartments ranging from studios to one, two and three bedrooms, along with a roof garden on the sixteenth floor and designs inspired by The Shard.

Demolition of Fielden House has already been completed with work already underway for the foundations of the new tower which is due to be completed by 2020.

The development marks the third phase of the 2.5m sq ft regeneration of the area immediately surrounding London Bridge Station and James Sellar, chief executive at Sellar Property Group, hailed the work as bringing the the ‘Shard Quarter trilogy’ closer to fruition.

He said: “With enabling works now complete, the appointment of Mace positions us one step closer to completing the much-acclaimed Shard Quarter trilogy.

“The area has been dramatically transformed over the past decade and is now a thriving cultural hub that has attracted new businesses and visitors.

“We anticipate significant interest in the apartments, and the building’s retail and leisure offer will complement the shops already operating in The Retail Arcade.”

As part of the contract, Mace will provide full construction management services for Shard Place which includes the delivery of the shell and core, the fit out of the apartments, all associated MEP services, residential amenities and the public realm.

Gareth Lewis, chief operating officer for construction of Mace described Shard Place as the final jewel in the crown for the development, and capped a fruitful relationship which has seen the construction firm work on almost every phase of the iconic development.

He commented: “Mace has worked on almost every element of Shard Quarter – from building The Shard itself to the News Building and the new station concourse.

“The fantastic proposals for Shard Place will complete this transformation and our appointment to deliver the final jewel in the crown following a competitive tender process feels very special.

“The enduring relationships that Mace builds with its clients are vital to its long-term success. After 11 years, our record at London Bridge is a real testament to our commitment to delivering on behalf of our clients.”
