Dolgellau Magistrates Court and Pontsian Primary School to be sold at auction
After its closure last year, the historic former Dolgellau Magistrates Court is to be put up for sale by auction next week, along with the building that was home to the Ceredigion village of Pontsian’s primary school.
The two properties will be among the lots due to go under the hammer at North West auction firm Pugh’s sale in Manchester on 17 October.
Dolgellau’s grade II listed former court building has a floorspace of over 4,000 sq ft and currently contains a large court room and associated office areas and amenities. The guide price for the property has been set at £70,000.
Designed by architect Edward Haycock, whose other projects included the vast Glynllifon country house in Carmarthenshire, the building was completed in 1825 as the county hall and 19th century administrative headquarters of Meirionnydd. Pontsian Primary School closed in July 2016 when it merged with a number of other schools into a 3-19 ‘super school’ in Llandysul. Now the building will go under the hammer with a guide price of £90,000-£100,000. The school building covers 2,700 sq ft and a floor plan has been drawn up outlining a proposed conversion to a residential bungalow.
Pugh managing director Paul Thompson said: “Dolgellau Magistrates Court and Pontsian Primary School are both unique buildings in some of the most beautiful areas of the country. There is a range of potential development opportunities available that would give these properties a new lease of life. “Not surprisingly we have seen a great deal of interest, which is in keeping with the growing appetite among investors from across the country for value for money investment opportunities.”
Pugh’s North West auction will be held in Manchester at the AJ Bell Stadium on 17 October. The firm’s North East auction will be held at Leeds United’s Elland Road Stadium on 19 October.
