Vauxhall to axe 250 jobs in attempt to boost Ellesmere Port plant productivity
Vauxhall is due to slash 250 jobs at its car plant in Ellesmere Port.
The automaker said the redundancies, coming on top of 400 job cuts announced last autumn, were to help it “accelerate the recovery of plant productivity”, according to the BBC.
The Ellesmere Port factory, where the Astra model has been manufactured since 1981, will consolidate workers from two production shifts to one.
Vauxhall is owned by French firm PSA Group, which sparked fears of job losses early last year after indicating its interest in a takeover.
The £1.9bn deal completed in August, making PSA Europe’s second biggest automaker behind after Volkswagen. PSA Group already owns car brands Citroen and Peugeot.
Vauxhall currently employs around 1,800 people at its Ellesmere Port facility
