Going the extra mile for cancer charity

With a training regime that consisted of just a one mile walk to and from the train station each day, FSC Oceans Operations Manager Steve Tumber recently defied the odds to conquer the marathon Thames Path Mighty Hike.

The grueling 26-mile hike was a step away from Steve’s usual role at privately-owned freight forwarding start-up FSC Oceans in Fulham, London where he focuses on getting clients’ goods, rather than himself, across the finish line.

Steve joined hundreds of people from all walks of life in completing the course from Windsor to Henley, along the banks of the iconic Thames River, to raise funds for MacMillan Cancer Support – a charitable organisation that supports those living with cancer.

“I didn’t tell many people I was taking part as I wasn’t sure if I would make it, but passing the finish gate at 26 miles was such a great feeling,” he said.

“Like most people today, cancer is something I’ve witnessed have a profound impact on those around me and completing the hike was my small contribution to help those affected.”

Starting at 10am, Steve took off from Windsor Race Course on what would become an eight hour and 40minute journey on foot through villages dotted along the Thames River banks to the West of London.

Steve crossed the finish line just in time for dinner at 6.40pm, finishing 271st out of 1,407 walkers in what was a valiant effort for a good cause.

“While I’ve clocked up the miles, there is still more work to be done to raise much needed funds to support people living with cancer. Every little bit counts and goes a long way to making the work of MacMillan Cancer Support possible.”
