Hull care home to host miniature funfair

Hull care home residents are set to enjoy all the fun of the fair as plans for their own show, which will rival the city’s annual event, get underway.

Cottingham’s Overton House, a Hica Group home, will host the event this week for residents who are unable to attend the annual Hull event, due to health and accessibility restrictions.

Staff from the specialist dementia home, have organised a jam-packed day filled with classic games and fabulous food such as: hook a duck, a coconut shy, ring toss and of course candyfloss.

Earlier this month, in preparation for the home’s funfair, volunteers from Hull Community Theatre visited Overton House.

Volunteers helped residents reflect on their fondest memories through discussion and re-enactments of their favourite funfair scenes.

Margaret Walker, the home’s manager said: “Residents thoroughly enjoyed the show Hull Community Theatre put on. It really got them in the mood for their upcoming funfair day.

“Many of our residents have fond memories of Hull Fair and are disappointed that they can no longer attend. I’m proud of our staff for organising such an inclusive event and I look forward to the day.”

Overton House often host fun filled, inclusive events and resident’s favourites include: Mad Hatters tea parties, Strictly Ballroom afternoons and baking competitions.

Penni Brown, chief executive said: “Overton House host some fantastic events. I am really proud of the staff for coming up with such an interactive event that fits in with what the local community are doing.

“I’m grateful that volunteers from the local theatre came by to help residents relive their fondest memories. They enjoyed this session and we plan to work with the theatre again.”

Overton House has invited another local specialist dementia Hica Group home, The Hollies to their event, which will take place this Friday 12.

Overton House is part of the Hull-based Hica Group, a not for profit organisation which operates a portfolio of 15 care homes across Hull and the East Riding. The company also runs two retirement villages and a homecare service which provides approximately 11,500 hours of support from four regional offices in the north of England.
