Plans approved for £60m riverside tower with ‘grandstand’ views of Newcastle city centre
A project to create a new residential tower rising to 20 storeys over the banks of the Tyne has received planning approval.
Liverpool-based developer Elliot Group will build its £60m Hawks Mill scheme behind the Baltic arts centre in Gateshead, on a development site overlooking Millennium Bridge.
Hawks Mill will span 268,000 sq ft and create 317 homes across a mix of studios and one-, two- and three-bed apartments.
It will also feature 112 parking spaces over two underground levels, a residents’ gym on its 14th floor and two ground-floor retail/café units.
The development is the first in the North East by Elliot Group, whose £600m pipeline includes the huge three-tower ‘Infinity’ scheme just north of Liverpool city centre.
Elliot Lawless, founder of Elliot Group, said: “We’re delighted to make our debut on Tyneside.
“It’s a thriving market with a great cultural scene and to be next to both the Baltic and Sage puts us right in the thick of things.”
He continued: “The views across to the Quayside and the city centre are wonderful. Newcastle’s hilly topography makes for a really interesting city scape and our residents are going to enjoy identifying landmarks and buildings they know.”
The design will feature a tapered façade reminiscent of New York’s iconic Flat Iron Building, according to designer David Bennett of Liverpool practice KDP Architects.
David commented: “It’s a great site with grandstand views of the river and the city centre. We’ve sought to maximise the windows so that wherever you’re sitting you’ll enjoy an interesting view.”
Elliot Group is currently in talks with a contractor and hopes to have construction work underway in Spring 2019.
Speaking further, Elliot Lawless said: “We have worked hard with Gateshead council to develop the right approach to the site and my thanks go to them for their constructive approach.”
