Salix Homes on ‘the cobbles’
Salford housing association Salix Homes has been helping set the scene for much-loved Manchester soap – Coronation Street.
Programme makers have been at Springbank sheltered housing scheme in Seedley and the Beechfarm area in Swinton, which are owned by Salix Homes, filming scenes for upcoming storylines due to be screened this month.
Actor Mikey North, who plays Gary Windass, was filming scenes at Springbank; while Corrie favourites Carla Connor and Peter Barlow, played by Alison Connor and Chris Gascoyne, were filming at an empty property earmarked for demolition on Kingsley Road in Swinton.
The actors caused quite a stir on set among the locals and were happy to pose for pictures and sign autographs with residents.
Sue Sutton, executive director of operations, at Salix Homes said: “Coronation Street is a national institution and the fictional town of Weatherfield is supposed to be in Salford, so we are always happy to accommodate filming in our communities.
“The scenes filmed at Beechfarm took place in one of our empty properties that is due to be demolished as part of a multi-million pound regeneration project in the area, so it was great to see the property put to good use in the meantime and we look forward to seeing it brought to life on ‘The Street’.
“Salix Homes does in fact have a rather interesting connection with ‘Corrie’ anyway. The real Coronation Street on the New Barracks Estate in Ordsall is in the heart of one of our estates and is said to have been the inspiration for the name behind the world-famous soap opera.”
The scenes at Springbank will be aired on Wednesday, April 10, while the scenes filmed at Kingsley Road, Beechfarm, will be aired on Wednesday, April 24 and Friday, April 26.
Proceeds raised from filming will be used to fund community projects in the area.
