120 potential jobs ‘at risk’ through redevelopment legal challenge
Councillors have said that a legal challenge against a new development in County Durham could put potential jobs and investment at risk.
The scheme to redevelop a brownfield site in Peterlee has been challenged legally by Praxis, owner of Castle Dene Shopping Centre.
The development, led by Quora (Peterlee) Ltd, would see the creation of three retail units on the 2.56 hectare site, as well as a restaurant and coffee house with drive thrus and free parking.
Two of the retail units are set to be occupied by Lidl and Home Bargains, relocating from their current units in the town centre, and the two restaurants will be occupied by Starbucks and KFC.
Cllr Carl Marshall, cabinet member for economic development said: “It is incredibly disappointing that something which would attract additional investment into the town is being challenged.
“The scheme would give a much-needed boost to Peterlee town centre at a time when town centres are struggling. New jobs and additional investment are now threatened as a result, along with the future of existing retailers in the town.”
Cllr Audrey Laing, ward member for Peterlee East, added: “Together with local residents I have been campaigning for the re-development of this site for many years. Peterlee is a growing town and deserves excellent facilities.
“I find it incomprehensible that anyone would object to new jobs and investment in the town. Residents tell me they want more and a better choice of shops and I strongly believe that this development would give a much needed boost to the local economy.”
