Sunderland engineer recognised for 56 year service

Mike Gardiner, an engineer from Sunderland has been awarded a prestigious prize for his commitment to the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), which he first joined in 1963.

At a ceremony held in Westminster, Mr. Gardiner was presented with the Warren Medal by ICE President Andrew Wyllie.

Mike first joined the ICE graduates and students in 1963, when he was 20. He subsequently became the inaugural Secretary of the Northumbria Branch and the Northern counties regional committee and served as the regional education coordinator for the North East for more than 25 years.

The award citation read: “Despite retiring from his day job 20 years ago, Mike still sits as Chairman of the ICE North East Seniors Group, Secretary of ICE North East Regional Education Team and ICE North East Northumbria Branch Secretary. Mike’s decades of valuable service to the North East branch makes him a worthy winner for the Warren Medal.”

Reflecting on the day, Mr. Gardiner said: “Although it was a long and tiring day, it was a very enjoyable event and had the added bonus of enabling me to sample the new Azuma train on the outward journey.”

The ICE Awards are held annually and recognise the contributions of ICE members. Penny Marshall, Regional Director of ICE North East, said: “Many congratulations to Mike who has made an extraordinary contribution to the ICE in the region for more than 50 years. His dedicated service is inspirational.”
