Planning underway for North East regeneration scheme
A planning application for a North East regeneration scheme has been submitted.
Avison Young on behalf of Taras Properties has submitted a planning application for Pilgrim Place at its prominent “gateway” Pilgrim Street regeneration scheme.
Pilgrim Place is located on the eastern side of Pilgrim Street, and adjoins the site of the former Bank of England currently fenced off as a vacant site.
The site includes the former Worswick Street bus station, Worswick Chambers and the NCP car park on Carliol Square.
The site occupies a prominent city centre gateway site on one of Newcastle’s most important historic streets.
At the heart of the scheme are plans to restore and refurbish Worswick Chambers and the adjacent 93 -101 Pilgrim Street (both listed buildings) for a range of uses including food and beverage operations.
Taras Properties, which owns the entire site, has worked up the development proposals with Newcastle City Council.
The first phase of the Pilgrim Place development will be the 14 floor, 120,000 sq ft Bank House, Grade A landmark office building.
Matt Verlander, director of Avison Young, commented: “Avison Young are delighted to have submitted this application which marks another key milestone in the major proposals to regenerate the Pilgrim Street area of the city centre.
“The Pilgrim Place application completes a comprehensive scheme for the ‘southern block’ site which includes the Bank House office building along with a major new public plaza (Pilgrim Place) with underground parking and 1 and 2 Pilgrim Place which will provide a further 35,000 sq. m of office space.
“We are also seeking to restore and refurbish the listed Worswick Chambers which is proposed to provide a unique setting for a variety of tenants including bar and restaurant businesses.”
