Sky appoints contractor for "most sustainable film and TV studio in the world"

A contractor has been appointed to start work on what is set to be “the most sustainable film and TV studio in the world”.

BAM has been appointed to build Sky Studios Elstree, which is being created by Legal & General, Sky and NBCUniversal.

The £192m studio will be to the north of London and is set to open in 2022, housing 13 sound stages and attracting £3bn of production spend over the first five years of operation.

Over the course of construction, 900 jobs are set to be created, with a further 1,500 planned once the studio is operational.

Sky Studios Elstree will not use gas or fossil fuels, but will source renewable energy with the capability to generate up to 20 per cent of energy onsite through solar energy.

The design for the new studios is being delivered by UMC Architects, Fairhurst and Hoare Lea, with Potter Raper Partnership undertaking the quantity surveying and project management of the scheme.
