£150m Tyneside riverside development to support over 3,000 jobs

A new multi-million pound development in South Tyneside is set to support thousands of jobs.

Housebuilder Keepmoat Homes has submitted a planning application to work in partnership with South Tyneside Council and Alnwick-based developer Cussins for the residential element of a new riverside community in South Shields.

The proposal seeks to transform the disused docks and surrounding brownfield land into a new housing development at Holborn Riverside, which will offer up to 350 new homes.

The scheme will include a new promenade, opening up access through the site from Laygate to Mill Dam along the riverside for both new and existing residents.

It is expected that the development will create or safeguard 1,500 construction jobs in the area, along with an additional 1,550 new future jobs from the 200,000 sq. ft. office space.

Ian Prescott, North East land & partnerships director at Keepmoat Homes, commented: “Our vision for the area is to create a place where people want to live and enjoy.

“If our plans are approved, we will ensure the development is a major benefit to the existing community as well as providing much-needed new homes on a site that has been left derelict for many years. Critically it will bring 350 new households into the area which will help sustain businesses in the nearby town centre.

“We’re looking forward to working in partnership with South Tyneside Council to provide high quality housing that integrates well with the local community, and we are excited about the prospect of turning our plans into reality.”
