BT to create up to 7,000 jobs amid predictions of "consistent" growth going forward

A UK telecommunications company has announced that it expects to see “consistent and predictable” growth as it commits to create up to 7,000 jobs.

BT Group, which provides mobile networks and internet services, announced today that it is expanding its Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) targets by 5 million premises.

The company, which owns FTTP provider Openreach, has said that the extended target will fuel up to 7,000 new jobs.

This comes as the group reports its full year results, which saw figures in line with expectations - revenue dropped by 7 per cent to £21.3m due to the impact of the pandemic, with EBITDA also falling by 6 per cent to £7.4m.

Philip Jansen, chief executive of BT Group, commented: “BT is already building more full fibre broadband to homes and businesses than anyone else in the UK.

“Today we are increasing our FTTP target from 20 million to 25 million homes and businesses to deliver further value to our shareholders and support the government’s full fibre ambitions.

“This has three massive benefits: it allows us to go faster, beefing up our capacity to build fibre to households and businesses; it allows us to go further, getting fibre to more people including in rural communities, and; it will help fuel UK economic recovery, with better connectivity and up to 7,000 new jobs.

“After a number of years of tough work, and as we look to build back better from the pandemic, we’re now pivoting to consistent and predictable growth.

“We are building a better BT for our customers, for the country and for those who work for this great company – now and in the future.”
