Consultancy lands key role to deliver land services in major East Anglia energy transmission project

A leading property consultancy has landed a key role in a major electricity transmission project which will support Government plans to connect enough offshore wind energy to power every home in the country by 2030.

Fisher German has been awarded the contract to deliver land services for National Grid’s proposed East Anglia GREEN project, which will reinforce the electricity network in East Anglia.

The proposed reinforcement consists of around 180 km of predominantly new overhead power lines, as well as some underground cabling running between Norwich, Bramford and Tilbury with a new 400 kV connection substation in the Tendring district.

It comes on the back of the Government’s commitment to reach net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 and an ambition to connect 50 GW of offshore wind by 2030.

To achieve this, offshore wind is being developed at scale, and around 60 per cent of the current offshore wind projects will come ashore along the East Coast, and as a result, the capacity of the existing network is being increased to transport this energy around the country.

Fisher German will be supporting National Grid throughout the Development Consent Order (DCO) process to gain the permissions required for the Nationally Significant Infrastructure Project (NSIP), liaising with affected landowners, negotiating land access and securing land agreements.

The firm has been contracted to provide land services throughout the duration of the consenting project, anticipated to be completed in 2026, and the work will see the firm expand into Bury St Edmunds where the project team are set to be based.

He said: “We are extremely pleased to be awarded the contract to provide land services for the East Anglia GREEN project. “It is a major project for National Grid and will play a key part in meeting the Government’s net zero targets, so it is very exciting for us to be able to contribute to this. “The contract will see us expand into East Anglia with a new office in Bury St Edmunds, and we will also be recruiting new members of the team as the project progresses.

“Fisher German has a significant amount of experience in DCOs, and we will be using our industry expertise to support throughout this process.

“We have just gone out to non-statutory public consultation and will now be liaising with landowners to gain survey access for environmental surveys as part of the initial steps.”
