Newcastle law firm invests in 'regional contractors' to fit out new Lumen HQ

As part of Bdaily’s latest feature week, The Property Market, we look to Newcastle based law firm Hay & Kilner, who is investing in a range of “expert regional contractors” to complete the fit-out of its new, “state-of-the-art” city headquarters

The independent practice will be taking over the whole of the fifth floor of The Lumen, which sits on St James’ Boulevard within the landmark Newcastle Helix hybrid city quarter, later in the summer.

After choosing fit-out specialist Overbury as main contractor, Hay & Kilner has now recruited firms including Integral Newcastle, Active Flooring North East and BPC Newcastle to work on the project.

Team Valley based N Purdy & Co have also been chosen to decorate the new offices, while Plunkett Tiling Contractors of Prudhoe will carry out the required tiling work.

The 14,600 sq ft open plan space comes with views over the surrounding cityscape and will allow Hay & Kilner to bring its whole Newcastle team together in one place, while also providing room for further colleagues to join them as the practice expands in the future.

A large social space and breakout spaces are also included, while a dedicated client suite runs along the front of the building.

Overbury has worked on several recent landmark projects in central Newcastle, including Central Square South, Northumbria University’s library and the Wellbar Central office complex.

The firm’s design team worked closely with the Hay & Kilner team on the development of the office space to ensure it met with the firm’s working requirements and fit with the firm’s “culture”.

Richard Walker, design and build project manager at Overbury Northern, commented: Hay & Kilner is another great opportunity for the Overbury Design & Build team. The whole Overbury team has worked in and around Newcastle, and in particular at the Lumen building, and are very excited to be delivering another fantastic space for a valued client.“

Sarah Furness, partner at Hay & Kilner Law Firm and a member of its management board, added: “Investing in local expertise was an important part of the specifications for this project and we’ve chosen to work with North East contractors wherever we could.

“The quality of The Lumen’s office space, the facilities it provides and its position within our home city are all second to none, and having this modern open plan office environment will deliver so many benefits to our employees in terms of collaborative working and sharing ideas.”
