Health Professions Post-Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) at the University of Sunderland

The Corporate and Professional Education (CaPE) team at the University of Sunderland are delivering a new Health Professions Post-Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) in September 2022 to help registered healthcare professionals to upskill and take their careers to the next level.

Healthcare professionals who are responsible for supporting other health professionals’ education can study on the course and gain the confidence, knowledge, and skills to deliver teaching in their clinical setting. This is a part time course specifically for Registered Nurses, Practice Educators and Practice Facilitators to gain a postgraduate qualification alongside their work commitments and support their professional development.

The course will cover a range of practical classroom teaching methods including problem-based learning, small group and one-to-one teaching and the use of role modelling in professional education, while also covering a range of pedagogical approaches. Additionally, applied educational theory, inter-professional learning and clinical simulation will be covered across two 30 credit modules.

Learners will also have the opportunity to hear from visiting speakers from a range of backgrounds who will share their experiences of working in the field. On successful completion of the course, learners will enhance their teaching practice and further their careers overall, allowing them to progress into further study at the University or clinical teaching roles.

Teaching will be delivered using a mix of lectures, group-based seminars, and interactive workshop activities at the University’s Sciences Complex, City Campus. Learners can benefit from the University’s state-of-the-art clinical and simulation facilities including the Living Lab, which boasts the region’s only immersive simulation room enabling participants to experience events in simulated environments.

The programme is 12 months long and begins on 26 September 2022 every Monday from 9.30am-3.30pm. The course cost is £2,500.
