Sunderland travel insurance specialist achieves record growth amid recruitment drive

Sunderland travel insurance specialist Just Travel Cover has reported its best ever month after a record-breaking January, with new recruits now needed to support further growth plans.

The broker, which specialises in cover for people with pre-existing medical conditions, recorded a 63 per cent uplift in the number of people it covered last January, exceeding pre-pandemic levels.

With double digit growth reported across all areas of the business, Just Travel Cover has bolstered its workforce too, with more than 40 staff across customer services, sales, marketing, compliance and finance now based at its city centre call centre and offices, and the company is now on the lookout for more recruits to keep up with demand.

Four new apprentices joined Just Travel Cover in 2022, and there are 12 who have completed the programme and gone into full time roles, including the company’s call centre manager and assistant manager.

Director Isabel Mellefont commented: “we’re really proud of our apprenticeship scheme we’re keen to welcome more young, local people into the company this year, with the level 2 customer service programme providing real opportunity.

“We’ve had an explosive start to the year as holiday bookings surge and people have a heightened sense of importance around Travel Insurance.

Call Centre manager Layla Stewart added: “I started my career here via the apprenticeship programme back in 2006. On completion I progressed through the company and I’m now the call centre manager.

“The fact that many of our department managers and supervisors have started as apprentices is a real plus for young people joining the company today, knowing they’re being coached and mentored by people who have been in their shoes”.

Just Travel Cover has made significant developments in recent years, including the launch of the UK’s first policy that pays in real time for lost luggage.

That coupled with investments in technology and systems, and the acquisition of travel insurance scheme provider Alpha Underwriting last year has contributed to the company’s growth, and puts Just Travel cover in an optimistic position for 2023 and beyond, with further plans already afoot for continued growth.

Isabel concluded: “the sustained period of growth since the pandemic is testament to the hard work and dedication of our team here in Sunderland, and we look forward to a bright future for our current crop of apprentices and those we welcome this year and beyond”.
