Teesside Airport celebrates “fantastic figures” as new holiday flights take off

Teesside Airport has been named the second most punctual in the UK, new figures from the Civil Aviation Authority have revealed.

2022 was the busiest year for more than a decade at Teesside, welcoming more than 173,000 passengers through its terminal, up more than 200 per cent on the previous year. At the height of the summer season in July, it was named the most punctual, with delays of just 11 minutes and nearly half of all flights taking off early.

Data on flight delays during 2022 showed that the average delay per departing flight at Teesside was just 14 minutes, more than half that of the airport with the longest delays (30 minutes) and just one minute off grabbing the top spot.

These figures will be great news for holidaymakers jetting out of the airport as TUI today ( May 9) launches its first flights of 2023 to Majorca. From May 27, the airline will double the number of services to the popular destination thanks to its successful season last summer.

Fairs-Lloyds Travel is also reintroducing its travel packages to Jersey on Saturday, ahead of TUI’s service to Antalya, Turkey, beginning on May 25 and Balkan Holidays’ Bulgaria trips on May 27. Ryanair will start its season on June 3 with Corfu.

It will also be “easier and smoother than ever” for passengers to pass through security to departures after the airport became the UK’s first to scrap the 100ml liquid requirement, meaning you can carry up to two litres of liquid per item. There is now also no need to remove liquid and electronics from bags thanks to its new security scanners.

Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen commented: “These fantastic figures show just how quick, easy and convenient it is for people to fly from their local airport this summer. They can get from their car, through check-in and security and be relaxing in departures in just minutes, and we’re always looking at ways to cut this time even more.

“Some delays will always be inevitable and outside of our control. But thanks to the investments we’ve made in our terminal and equipment, our staff and by bringing teams in-house, we’re almost at the top of the table, even while seeing the most passengers since 2011.

“Last July we were named the most punctual for that month, and our dedicated airport team will do everything they can to claw back that minute as we ramp up our 2023 holiday flights to make us the best we can be.”
