Teesside University joins collaborative data science network

The Turing University Network was launched by The Alan Turing Institute, the national institute for data science and artificial intelligence, which was named after the pioneering mathematician and computer scientist.

It was developed to connect universities working within data science and artificial intelligence, encourage collaborations and tackle real-world challenges through cutting-edge research. As a member of the prestigious network, Teesside University welcomes the opportunity to showcase its expertise and take advantage of new opportunities.

Professor Claudio Angione, who specialises in artificial intelligence within Teesside University’s School of Computing, Engineering & Digital Technologies, said: “Teesside University is a powerhouse within the data science and artificial intelligence domain, so we are thrilled to be a part of such a prestigious network.

“We look forward to working with the Turing University Network and The Alan Turing Institute, and we are excited to embark upon new collaborations and projects as a result.”

Donna Brown, director of academic engagement at The Alan Turing Institute, said in a statement: “The network is crucial to successful delivery of the Institute Strategy, enables our role as a national convenor in the data science and AI landscape, and creates opportunity for meaningful collaboration where interests align across research and innovation, skills, and engagement.”

Teesside University has also received a further Turing Network Funding award from The Alan Turing Institute, which will enable the University to lead a research networking event later this month alongside universities from across the UK.

The event, titled ‘AI in Biomedicine and Healthcare’, will explore how artificial intelligence has impacted the way experts diagnose, treat and prevent diseases.

Dr Annalisa Occhipinti, senior lecturer in Computer Science (Data Analytics) from Teesside University’s School of Computing, Engineering & Digital Technologies, will be among the guest speakers sharing insight.

Professor Angione added: “This is the second time Teesside University has secured a funding award from The Alan Turing Institute. We are thrilled to once again receive the support, which will contribute to our ongoing research around the true potential of data science and artificial intelligence.”
