Global heating firm creates local job opportunities with new Sunderland office

A global provider of industrial process heating has opened a new UK head office in the North East of England.

Thermon, which has operated in the UK for over 40 years, has invested in a new regional head office at Washington Business Centre. The move follows a record year for the group, as global revenue exceeded $420m (approx. £330m) in 2022/2023 and its UK business continued to go from strength-to-strength.

Central to its growth has been the company’s investment in developing new products to serve the renewable energy markets, as well as its traditional petrochemical and heavy industry customers.

This change of focus has opened new revenue streams and helped the company secure a number of huge projects in the UK, from heating the pipes for SABIC and Wood Group’s billion-pound Teesside Improvement Project to Renew ELP’s Project Wilton International, where the company is designing, supplying and installing the site’s entire heat network.

Chris Lindsay, engineering manager (Europe), commented: “The opening of the new office is yet another show of faith from the group into the strength of the UK market and particularly the North East.

“We’ve been based in the region for the best part of four decades now, however the last few years in particular have been really good for the business as we’ve expanded more into providing solutions for renewable energy production facilities.

“This has opened up a lot of opportunities for the business and as we look to continue growing our footprint in the UK, it’ll be crucial that we are able to tap into the region’s skilled talent pool to ensure we continue investing in the region for another 40 years.”

Thermon looked at multiple sites across the North East but chose Washington Business Centre after being shown around the centre by the business investment team at Sunderland City Council and being impressed by its ‘strategic location at the heart of the region’s advanced manufacturing and green industries’.

Cllr Graeme Miller, leader of Sunderland City Council, added: “It’s always nice to welcome new businesses to the city but even more so when it’s a global business which has continued to put its trust in the region by investing here for the best part of four decades.

“As well as providing skilled job opportunities for local people, it’s also showing the world that the North East is a fantastic place to do business and we are absolutely thrilled that they will be continuing to invest here for years to come.”
