York-based renewables company increases turnover to £38m with London acquisition

Fast growing Cleantech business Green Building Renewables, has expanded its nationwide network into South West London and the home counties by acquiring JEM Energy.

Farnborough-based JEM Energy is the ninth company to join Green Building Renewables as it rapidly grows its nationwide network across England due to the increasing demand for solar technology.

Last week, it was reported by trade body Solar Energy UK (SEUK) that the UK had set a new annual record for 2023 with 138,336 solar PV installations since 2022, up from 137,926 last year, which SEUK said was “a record for the post-subsidy industry.” As of September 26, solar installations recorded by MCS for the year have risen to 142,091.

At the same time, in his recent net-zero strategy update, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced that the UK Government was hoping to incentivise market growth in the heat pump sector further by increasing the grant available through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme from £5,000 to £7,500 for heat pumps. It targets 600,000 annual heat pump installations by 2028 (market size of c.£9bn).

According to recent research commissioned by Green Building Renewables and conducted by Censuswide, almost three in five Brits are willing to pay more for Green Homes as they fear extreme weather events over the next ten years.

Over half (57 per cent) of Brits are willing to pay more for a house with renewable or low carbon technology like solar panels, heat pumps or EV chargers. One in four (25 per cent) would be willing to pay between £15k and £25k extra for a green property. 11 per cent willing to pay more than £45k extra for a green home.

Green Building Renewables’ fast growth in the last two years reflects the demand for solar that is being seen across both the residential and commercial property sectors. In just under two years, the York-headquartered company has increased its turnover more than tenfold from £3m to £38m. Staff numbers have risen from 18 staff to over 200 in thirteen regional offices across England.

This further expansion of Green Building Renewables into the South is part of the company’s continued strategic vision to extend the benefits of solar energy and low carbon heating to as many local communities as possible nationwide.

Its model is built on providing regional expertise and cutting-edge technology, which is only installed by in-house engineers. The company aims to deliver efficient, reliable, cost-effective solar power solutions to businesses, homes, and industries in the region and the UK.

Managing director of Green Building Renewables, Chris Delaney, said, “The government might be delaying its net zero targets and green ambitions, but this differs from what we see from our customers. Homeowners and business owners nationwide are embracing and adopting renewable energy for their buildings.

“They recognise the tangible benefits of saving money on their bills, being less reliant on the grid and reducing their environmental footprint. The recent statistics for the increased demand for solar speak for themselves, and at Green Building Renewables, we are creating a company that reflects this growth.

“Our expansion further into the South will allow us to reach even more customers, allowing them to take advantage of our award-winning service. We welcome James Rodwell and his team at JEM Energy to ours.”
