Council's Cabinet approves heritage funding for Huddersfield

Kirklees Council’s Cabinet have just approved a grant to support the development of Grade II Listed buildings on John William Street in Huddersfield.

This funding will come from the Heritage-Led Regeneration Scheme (HLRS), a capital grant scheme which was approved by Cabinet in February 2019.

The current owner of the building, B&M Properties, have been awarded a grant of £610,500 to make improvements to 19-33a John William Street, a terrace of three-storey stone-fronted buildings comprising housing, retail and commercial spaces on one of the town’s most prominent gateways leading from St. George’s Square.

The buildings on John William Street are Grade II Listed due to their significant architectural and historic interest, and sit within the Huddersfield Town Centre Conservation Area and the Huddersfield High Street Heritage Action Zone – which has attracted significant investment from Historic England – as well as the HLRS priority area.

The funded work will include improvements to the shopfronts, which will bring their look and feel more in line with the street’s heritage and architecture, and will also bring empty properties within the building back into use.

Councillor Graham Turner, Cabinet Member for Finance & Regeneration, says: “While we’re very much looking to the future with all our town centre developments, we’re also future-proofing our beautiful heritage.

“These buildings, on one of Huddersfield’s busiest streets, have so much potential. We want to see that potential realised, and make sure they remain not only functional but thriving for many years to come.”
