Tyne Tunnels gives donation to save lives and reduce pollution

Hundreds of lives are set to be saved - and the carbon footprint of the journeys made to save them, reduced - thanks to a generous partnership with St John Ambulance.

The operator of the Tyne Tunnels, TT2, is gifting the first aid and health response charity with an electric community support vehicle and 30 cycle response bikes worth £115,000, over a three-year partnership.

The new fleet will help the charity continue to keep communities safe and replace some of its older and less-efficient vehicles which will improve its service and its environmental impact.

The new bikes will also ensure St John volunteers can reach emergency situations in busy areas that are often difficult to reach by car or ambulance.

National Fleet Manager for St John Ambulance, Phillip Howard said: “Across the country our volunteers and ambulance crews help keep our communities safer by providing life-saving care at busy events, in crowds and responding to 999 calls.

“This generous donation from TT2 will go directly towards our fleet and will make a huge impact. It will help us become greener and more efficient, but most importantly ensure we are able to continue reaching those who need our help in those moments that matter.”

The funds will be donated over three years and the partnership will include a collaboration to promote and educate on safety practices and road safety.

TT2’s CEO, Adrian Wallace, said: “We have a huge safety focus here at TT2 and we are proud to support such a key charity in our region and across the UK.

“We’ve funded many transport schemes in the North East for charities including Daft as a Brush, Tiny Lives and Red Sky, but this is our largest commitment to date.”

TT2, which operates the Tyne Tunnels, supports lots of charities and good causes in the region every year via its substantial good-will donations programme.
