Skills bootcamps ‘boost careers’ in North Yorkshire
Over 800 learners in York and North Yorkshire are set to gain valuable skills through a series of skills bootcamps, offering training in key areas and helping “fill vital skills gaps” for local employers.
Commissioned by the York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority, 33 courses have been launched across industries such as digital, marketing, green skills, HGV driving, construction, finance, leadership, and forestry.
Twenty providers are delivering the training, with courses running until March 2025. Funded by the Department for Education, the initiative helps participants transition into new industries or progress in their current careers.
This was exactly the case for Joe Gaughan, who gained four essential qualifications in arboriculture, with the bootcamp proving transformational to his career prospects.
“Without the skills bootcamp, I don’t think I’d have been able to progress and get into the work that I want to do as quickly.
“Being able to enrol onto this course and complete it has probably halved the time that it’d take me to get into the industry.
“It’ll lead me to being able to work for myself, make more money and subcontract myself out at a higher rate.”
Courses last up to 16 weeks and can be completed in-person or online. Learners also benefit from guaranteed job interviews or new career opportunities upon completion, supporting their journey toward employment or business growth if they are self-employed.
David Skaith, mayor of York and North Yorkshire, added: “The Combined Authority’s programme of skills bootcamps creates opportunities for people in and out of work and helps fill vital skills gaps for local employers.
“I’m really pleased that, as a Combined Authority, we have secured Government funding to create these opportunities.
“It’s a boost for residents, businesses, and will help the overall growth of our local economy.”
