A week in the life... Sam Spoors
In a new feature for Bdaily, Sam Spoors, founder and director at recruitment firm Talentheads, provides an insight into her typical working week, highlighting how she balances commercial sector demands with life outside the office.
Monday: What gets you motivated for the start of the working week?
Once my children are asleep, Sunday is about prepping for the week ahead.
I get a running start on my emails, before ensuring I’m straight around the week ahead and, logistically, how it will all work out.
On Monday morning, I’m walking into our Morpeth headquarters, albeit clutching a child’s cereal bar, ready to pop the kettle on and join our first full team huddle of the week.
This is where we explore our daily goals, offer support and share our feelings for the week ahead.
After this, it's action stations.
Tuesday: The diary is full of meetings and commitments – how do you balance such responsibilities with productivity?
I am blessed to have Kelly, my amazing executive assistant.
As my diary is usually jam-packed a month in advance, she keeps me focused and prioritises any ad-hoc requirements that come through.
Kelly works incredibly closely with our heads of departments and the wider team to ensure nothing sits unactioned.
Wednesday: Halfway there – how do you stay focused and re-energise yourself for the days to come?
At Talentheads, our team enjoys Wisdom Wednesdays.
We grab a hot drink, settle down in our comfy break-out area, and participate in a team learning session.
We take turns exchanging skills, knowledge and experiences across the full team.
Any important updates – from legal changes, economic updates or changes in practices – are shared internally.
It is a great chance to hone our skills within recruitment, along with any learning and development strategies, to ensure we remain on top of our game for clients while growing our business too.
Thursday: The weekend draws closer – how do you stay on top of your to-do list as the end of the week gets nearer?
Thursday tends to be my home working day.
This is the day I dedicate to working ‘on’ the business, rather than ‘in’ it.
I join the morning huddle first thing, to ensure our team has everything required, then I focus on our strategy.
This helps me step back from the day-to-day running of Talentheads, to explore and plan our next steps.
Friday: The last day – how do you approach Fridays, and how do you unwind after the working week that has just passed?
I love Friday, so regardless of whether I’m in the office or off-site at a meeting, I always head into work with a spring in my step.
We’ve recently expanded with a second Talentheads site in County Durham and, across both, Friday is typically the day most of our team work together from an office.
It provides real opportunities for sharing, creativity and working together, to get our individual and collective goals over the line.
But we also close slightly earlier on a Friday, to encourage our team to return home to their loved ones for precious family time.
I’ll linger around until most of the team have left, so I can take stock and ensure everything is complete.
Then I’ll also head home to a very busy house – with four children and a pair of dogs – and a glass of wine to celebrate the start of the weekend.
