University research group scores with UEFA work
A university research group has played a key role in designing the official match balls for the UEFA Europa League and UEFA Conference League.
Sheffield Hallam University’s Sports Engineering Research Group (SERG) partnered with Decathlon UK to develop the high-performance KIPSTA balls, which were tested at the university’s Advanced Wellbeing Research Centre.
Using high-speed cameras and force platforms, researchers assessed aerodynamics and material composition to ensure FIFA compliance.
The partnership also provided hands-on experience for Sheffield Hallam students.
Dr Simon Goodwill, head of research in the School of Sport and Physical Activity, said: “Our collaboration with Decathlon underscores SERG's commitment to advancing sports equipment and ensuring these match balls meet the highest standards of performance, quality and consistency.
“It's incredibly rewarding to see our research contribute to the game at such a high level."
The match balls debuted in the 2024/2025 season, and are now available in more than 40 Decathlon stores nationwide.
Will Taylor, UK commercial director – teamsports at Decathlon, added: “We are incredibly proud of the impact this partnership has had on professional football.
“By combining our passion for sport with Sheffield Hallam University’s research, we’ve created match balls that meet the demands of elite players and elevate the playing experience for footballers of all levels.”
