North East secures major transport funding boost
The North East's transport network is set for significant upgrades thanks to a £188.7 million boost.
The package includes £116.8 million from the City Region Sustainable Transport Settlement (CRSTS) for 2025/26, alongside £23 million for County Durham to join the scheme.
An additional £39 million has been allocated for Metro renewals, with £9.85 million in capability funding to support regional transport plans.
Officials say the funding will help deliver integrated, sustainable transport improvements, aligning with North East mayor Kim McGuinness’ vision and the region’s emerging Local Transport Plan (LTP) and Local Growth Plan.
Mayor McGuinness, said: “This multi-million-pound funding from the Government recognises the huge ambition of the North East and our ability to roll our sleeves up and deliver major, transformative transport schemes which greatly benefit our communities.
“I am pleased the Government supports our ambitions and has allocated this substantial funding to allow us to get on with the job of delivering the world-class transport network that people of the North East deserve.
“This award is very welcome news for the North East and a major milestone which shows this Government is working with me to get the job done.”
The announcement comes only days after the North East Combined Authority was awarded £9.5 million from Active Travel England, and also follows the recent public consultation on the LTP, which received over 16,000 responses.
