'One-of-a-kind' eco retreat revives historic church
A holiday let has combined historic charm with eco-innovation, using local business support to share its sustainable story with the world.
Warksburn Old Church, near Hadrian’s Wall, in Wark, Northumberland, has undergone a £1 million transformation to become the first Passivhaus-certified church conversion in the world.
Owners Alan and Anne James received a £2000 Enterprise & Start Up Grant from the Northumberland Small Business Service (NSBS) to support PR consultancy and raise the profile of their one-of-a-kind retreat.
The 19th century gothic church has retained its historic character while incorporating cutting-edge sustainable features such as solar panels, triple glazing and advanced insulation.
Now operating as a luxury, net-zero holiday let, the building produces more energy than it consumes.
Alan said: “We knew achieving the rigorous Passivhaus standard in a historic building would be a challenge.
“We are very proud and are grateful that with the support from NSBS we can shout about our new business venture and spotlight the importance and possibility of achieving net-zero as a tourism business.
“This project has been a labour of love, and we’re so proud to offer something truly one-of-a-kind.
“The support we received allowed us to take this historic church into the future without compromising its character.”
In addition to PR support, NSBS funded a digital marketing campaign to boost the business’s online reach.
The couple also took part in a business planning workshop to build a strong foundation for future growth.
Lucy Evermore, NSBS programme manager, added: “The variety of businesses we get to work with is amazing.
“The innovation from Warksburn Old Church is truly astounding and the team and I are excited to have been able to support with their marketing efforts.
“We look forward to hearing more about the success of Warksburn Old Church.”
NSBS, delivered by Northumberland County Council and part-funded by the North East Combined Authority and UK Government, supports micro and small businesses across the region with workshops, one-to-one support and grant funding opportunities.
