College rewarded for environment credentials
A North East education provider has been recognised for its commitment to sustainability.
Gateshead College has achieved Silver status from Investors in Environment (iiE), scoring 80 per cent for its wide-ranging environmental initiatives.
The accreditation recognises the college’s focus on waste management, carbon reduction and community engagement.
Efforts have included The Bike Shed, Green Careers Week, repurposing schemes like FreePop – a project offering pre-loved clothing and footwear – and a collaboration with Magic Hat and the Marriott Hotel to reduce food waste.
Nadine Hudspeth, director of brand and student experience at Gateshead College, said: “Receiving the Investors in Environment accreditation is a huge achievement for the college.
“We’re thrilled to have earned the Silver level, which acknowledges the strides we’ve made in sustainability over the past three years.
“This achievement reflects our commitment to tackling climate change and the collective efforts of our students, staff and governors.”
Jo Holmes, managing director at Gateshead-based Genee Consulting, a B Corp environmental sustainability consultancy, added: “It’s inspiring to see a leading institution like Gateshead College prioritising sustainability and actively reducing its environmental footprint.
“With initiatives such as cycling support programmes and Green Careers Week, they’re integrating environmental responsibility into both their education and day-to-day operations.
“We look forward to continuing our work with the college as they advance their sustainability goals.”
