Getting to know… George Bacon
In a feature looking at the person behind the business profile, George Bacon, founder and chief executive of London-based digital marketing consultancy GBM Group, talks about his career path, his love for the capital city and childhood chess success.
Did you always want to work in social media?
I’ve always had a love for social media, from making my personal Instagram account as soon as the platform was launched to creating more than 100 pages across X/Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Reddit and YouTube.
After discovering – unintentionally – that I could turn what I started for fun into an income stream, and eventually into a business employing more than ten people, I fell in love with the job more and more, and what was once purely a passion has turned into a career.
What’s the best bit about your job? And the worst?
I love the social aspect of my job and being able to connect with anyone over one common interest.
It sounds cliché, but I generally love all aspects of my job; if I really had to pick one bad aspect, it would be the admin side of things.
What do you consider to be your greatest achievement?
Completing my university degree during COVID-19 while building GBM.
How do you relax outside of work?
To be completely honest, I probably don’t.
I really like to keep busy and not relax too much.
Outside of work, I enjoy going to the gym/running to unwind and take a break.
What makes London such a great place to live and work?
London is full of opportunities for those who want them and are willing to put in the work.
I feel like London is where those who are truly talented will shine.
There is a lot of competition, which is healthy when trying to develop your career.
Minus the ridiculous rent prices, London is the best city to live in.
I’ve been very fortunate to be able to travel for work and have visited a lot of different cities across the world, but no city compares to the London vibe.
You genuinely cannot beat London when the sun is shining and it is warm.
London is full of different cultures, which is really important, and there aren’t many other cities like it.
Tell us something about you we didn’t know…
I represented England at chess when I was growing up.
That always surprises people who don’t know me.
