Royal recognition for North East trailblazers

Two North East businesses have received a King’s Award for Enterprise.

Newcastle-based Shared Interest Society received the accolade in the sustainable development category for the fourth time, recognising its 35-year commitment to fair trade finance.

With more than 10,000 UK members, the ethical lender supports nearly half a million people across 47 countries by providing access to vital funds for smallholder farmers and craft producers.

Patricia Alexander, the soon to retire managing director of Shared Interest, said: “Receiving the King’s Award in our 35th anniversary year is a truly special moment for us.

“It recognises the resilience and determination of our global community of members, customers, volunteers and staff who continue to work tirelessly towards a more equitable world.

“Since our last royal recognition, we have grown our membership base to over 10,000 and increased our lending impact, reaching more than 416,000 producers, including 156,000 women, across the globe.

“This award celebrates the collective efforts of those who believe in the power of trade, not aid, to lift people out of poverty.”

Meanwhile, North Shields-based OsecoElfab was recognised for excellence in international trade following significant growth in overseas sales.

The safety technology manufacturer, which designs and exports pressure relief systems, employs 85 staff and forms part of FTSE 100 group Halma.

Steve Gallo, managing director of OsecoElfab, added: “We are honoured to receive the King’s Award for International Trade, which is a testament to the steep growth our strategy has enabled, as well as the hard work and dedication of our entire team.

“The company has responded to global economic challenges and opportunities with a strategy and execution model that focuses on geographic expansion, delivering innovative solutions and exceptional customer service."

Both companies are among just 197 UK organisations to receive the King’s Award this year.
