Liverpool cement hub boosts construction drive

A port operator says it has strengthened its building sector presence with a £35 million distribution base.

Peel Ports Group is working with Medcem to redevelop an ex-P&O site at Port of Liverpool's Gladstone Dock into a deep-water cement terminal.

Bosses say the facility will store 45,000 tonnes of cement and supplementary cementitious materials, which help reduce carbon emissions in concrete production.

They add the site’s 5.75 acres will allow for future expansion and increased storage capacity, aligning with the Government’s commitment to build 1.5 million homes by the end of the current parliament.

Construction is set to start this month, with completion expected by mid-2026.

Andrew Martin, Peel Ports' group development director, said: “By creating smarter, more sustainable import hubs like this, we can help building firms secure the materials they need.

“This project reinforces Liverpool’s role as a base for investment that can drive regional, national and international growth, while opening up new employment opportunities.”

Enver Celikbas, Medcem business development and investments director, added: “This new terminal significantly strengthens our presence in the UK market, consolidating our position as the leading provider of low-carbon cement and cementitious materials in Europe.

“The logistical advantages of Liverpool allow us to enhance our ability to accommodate large vessels and product handling.

“This strengthens our supply chain, ensuring a more efficient and reliable service for our clients across the region.”
